With thousands of options, how will we pick a career that is right for us? Finding the right job is not something that is decided with a calculator on our desk. When we don’t have any idea of our career, the task of finding the right career may seem insurmountable. In life, we do have many plans for our career. When we are young, we are constantly asked the question: “What do you want to become?” We answered that we would like to become an “engineer”, a “doctor”, or an “advocate”. Even as we do grow up, we tend to pursue some specific studies expecting to follow a linear path towards our chosen career.
We may feel pressured to plan our whole life before we start applying to colleges. That’s not necessarily the best approach. While a certain career may seem like a good fit for us now, just think about how different we may be in 5, 10, or 20 years. As we get older, have more experiences and learn new things, our feelings about what we want to do may change.
Choosing Career
We ought to always remember the fact that there is no one perfect career. Choosing a career is a big deal. When choosing a right career, we will try to match our skills and interests with work in certain areas. There won’t be one perfect match—even jobs that sound ideal will probably involve some things we dislike. It is important to understand our range of skills and knowledge, so we can see if they are a good fit for the job we would like to do. Also we should consider where we are now, where we want to be, and how we are going to get there. If choosing a career has left us feeling lost, we start asking ourselves the following questions: what we are good at? What are our interests, motivations, and values? What did we most enjoy at college or university? What kind of lifestyle do we want? What do we want from our career? Lack of considering job demand when deciding career direction can lead to many regrets. This is why choosing the right career is important.
When we have only a few occupations left on our list, we ought to conduct informational interviews. That is, we start doing more in-depth research. We must arrange to meet with professional people who work in the occupations in which we are interested. They can provide firsthand knowledge about the careers on our short list.
Right motive towards career
Once we make a decision to choose the right career, we ought to identify our long- and short-term goals. Doing this will allow us to eventually work in our chosen field. The quicker we make the right career decision, the sooner we can get on with the job of being passionate day to day. Our career can be something that we love and not all about making money. And doing something we love will change the way we treat people, how we react to negative situations and even the time we spend with our family.
The right career choice is just around the corner. Let us go forward and grab it.
