Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has unequivocally stated that he has no intention of acquiring TikTok’s U.S. operations. This clarification comes amid ongoing discussions about the future of the popular video-sharing app in the United States.

Elon Musk’s Stance on TikTok Acquisition

During an interview at the WELT Economic Summit, Elon Musk addressed the circulating rumors about his potential interest in TikTok. He emphasized that he has not made a bid for the platform and does not use the app himself. Elon Musk remarked, “I rarely acquire companies and prefer to build them from scratch,” highlighting that his acquisition of Twitter (now rebranded as X) was an exception aimed at preserving freedom of speech.

Background on TikTok’s U.S. Operations

TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, has been under intense scrutiny by U.S. lawmakers due to national security concerns. The primary issue revolves around the potential for user data to be shared with the Chinese government, a claim that TikTok has consistently denied. In response to these concerns, former President Donald Trump had previously attempted to ban the app in the U.S., citing threats to national security.

Speculations and Alternative Proposals

In light of the potential ban, there has been widespread speculation about possible acquisitions of TikTok’s U.S. operations. Reports have suggested that companies like Microsoft were in advanced talks to purchase TikTok’s U.S. business.

Additionally, AI company Perplexity AI submitted a proposal to merge with TikTok and offer half of the new entity to the U.S. government, aiming to address national security concerns.

Expert Opinions

Industry analysts have weighed in on the situation, noting the complexities involved in such acquisitions. Patrick Moorhead, a technology industry analyst, commented that acquiring TikTok would be a significant shift for any company, given its unique content and user base. He emphasized the importance of understanding the platform’s dynamics and the potential regulatory hurdles involved.

Elon Musk’s clear statement dispels rumors of his involvement in acquiring TikTok’s U.S. operations. As discussions about the app’s future in the U.S. continue, various proposals and potential buyers emerge, each aiming to address the national security concerns that have been at the forefront of this debate.
