In the logistics and supply chain industry, the introduction of AI can be seen as a major innovation that can save valuable time and money. Many companies have made progress in the field of data and connectivity, but their journey to become an AI-driven company has just started. Understanding the need to adapt AI tech into every day supply chain tasks, GROUND Inc. is one company that has taken a leadership role in the industry. The company was founded by experts who have worked for major logistics companies in Japan. It is led by Hiratomo Miyata, CEO. He says, “With the increasing demand of logistics solutions, GROUND has been working to deal with issues and difficulties in logistics area with state-of-the-art technologies.

GROUND is a company dedicated to empower logistics organizations with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics so that they can promptly adapt to volatile and unpredictable customer demands. Intelligent logistics, the company’s core concept, is going to be a powerful tool to transform logistics. Intelligent Logistics includes the world’s first ever logistics platform offered by GROUND. With Intelligent Logistics, GROUND is allowing companies to automate operations through revolutionary logistics robot system, drive faster and more accurate decision-making and improve business activities. With extensive use of AI in logistics, the company has continuously helped business to bring more visibility into their core operations.

The company has also worked to advance the capability of AI-enabled computing systems in the global logistics and distribution industry. GROUND takes an innovative approach to bring AI to logistics and supply chain. First, GROUND sees the value of smart data, not necessarily big data. In this vein, GROUND collects and analyses data from various logistics related tasks like packaging formats, storage conditions, and item shapes. Applying AI technologies to these datasets, the company is able to create a concrete plan in designing and planning storage locations based upon intelligent algorithms and machine-to-machine analysis of data sets.

Second, GROUND believes in the power of transfer learning, therefore, they create capabilities to connect AI systems in a cost-efficient way to speed up knowledge generation and dissemination. As AI systems can learn from data, it becomes for easy for companies to automate challenging tasks and improve their models. Transfer learning allows the company to apply the knowledge generated through one dataset to formulate knowledge through different datasets.

The company success is heavily relying on a dynamic team of professionals who provide valuable guidance to help improve the learning of the AI system. By combining smart data and transfer learning, the company can successfully recognize patterns and reinforce learning techniques to refine AI systems with reasonable time and costs.

Artificial Intelligence for Warehouse Management

GROUND aims to improve warehouse operations from receiving to shipping with its AI modules called Dynamic Allocation Systems (DyAS). DyAS helps the following areas of operation, for example,

Putaway/Picking improvement: diagnose inventory locations and propose optimized combinations of inventory and inventory locations to balance shipping volumes and the number of staff needed to complete such daily shipping volumes

Order batch optimization: compute the batch sizes, sequences, and routings of putaway/picking and estimate processing time and probabilities of its completion by the required shipping time

Resource allocation: estimate operation resources required to process daily or weekly order shippment and propose the number of robots need to introduce given increasing difficulties to hire and secure human warehouse staff

Miyata shares, “Developing good AI systems is like raising a child in a way that both need information bits by bits and learn how to react gradually over time rather than instantly.”In logistics, most AI providers that aim to optimize warehouse operations either manufacture robotics with built-in AI capabilities or provide AI software with consulting capabilities. Usually, a warehouse is not fully equipped with robots, which means warehouses tend to operate a hybrid of manual and machine labor. That itself indicates warehouse operations need to be well-coordinated with a holistic view. He adds, “GROUND believes that humans and robots need to collaborate on time with the help of artificial intelligence by feeding different sets of data in large volume repetitively.”

Going forward, GROUND plans to establish a new platform to realize Intelligent logistics that brings together the latest in AI, robotics and logistics software. Miyata aspires to transform the platform into a robust and effective system that can enable customers to quickly adapt to new technology changes.

Miyata concludes, “We seek to develop and build a next-generation logistics facilities named Intelligent Logistics Center that can realize Intelligent Logistics, and conduct a joint demonstration of logistics technologies such as robots and AI.
